When we think of rallying, brands like Subaru, Citroën, Audi, and of course Lancia instantly come to mind. The Italian manufacturer is one of the most successful in World Rally Championship history. To celebrate the release of the iconic Lancia Delta HF Integrale in 1/12 scale, we invite you to take a brief look back at Lancia’s rally adventure.

Lancia, an incredible rally success story

In the 1950s, like many manufacturers, Lancia sought to build its reputation by entering the still-emerging world of motorsport. It all began with a specially modified Aurelia B20 designed for competition. These B20s competed in the most iconic races of the time: Mille Miglia, Targa Florio, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the Panamericana. Scuderia Lancia made a strong impression, notably with a podium finish at the Mille Miglia ahead of Caracciola’s Mercedes and a victory at the Targa Florio. Two years later, Louis Chiron (former Bugatti works driver) won the already legendary Monte Carlo Rally!

The 1960s confirmed Lancia’s ability to shine in rallying. With the Fulvia HF and a promising driver named Sandro Munari, the Italian brand gained momentum during the second half of the decade. Then came the rise of international rallying with the creation of the International Championship for Manufacturers (1970–1972), followed by the World Rally Championship for Manufacturers starting in 1973. The Fulvia secured a title in 1972 before giving way to the first car specifically designed for rallying: the Stratos. With Sandro Munari, the Stratos became one of the discipline’s benchmarks, winning three consecutive titles (1974–1975–1976).

The 1980s were marked by the excitement surrounding Group B and its extreme cars. Lancia competed with the 037, which, despite being rear-wheel drive, managed to beat its German rival, the four-wheel-drive Audi quattro. Facing increasingly fierce competition, Lancia responded by drawing inspiration from Peugeot and launching a compact model: the Delta S4. The Delta S4 achieved strong results, but the tragedy of the 1986 Tour de Corse brought an abrupt end to Group B and relegated the Delta S4 to history. However, this was far from the end of Lancia and the Delta’s story in rallying.

Following the end of Group B and the introduction of Group A, Lancia was one of the first manufacturers to react, launching the Delta 4WD. Success was immediate. The small Italian car won the title as early as 1987. It was a complete triumph, with Massimo Biasion securing the drivers’ title—the first Italian to do so since Sandro Munari. The Delta evolved over the years, relentlessly winning titles and dominating the competition. Between 1987 and 1993, Lancia claimed six consecutive manufacturers’ titles and four drivers’ titles. Only Carlos Sainz managed to challenge this dominance, winning championships in 1990 and 1992 with Toyota.

For the 1992 season, Lancia introduced the final evolution of the Delta: the HF Integrale (Evo). As with every model developed since the 1960s, success came quickly. Didier Auriol dominated the Monte Carlo Rally, securing another victory for Scuderia Lancia in one of the most iconic events. The 1992 season was defined by a thrilling duel between Toyota and Lancia. While the Italian team won the manufacturers’ championship, its Japanese rival took the drivers’ title thanks to Carlos Sainz. The year 1992 also marked the end of a remarkable era, as Lancia withdrew at the end of the season, concluding nearly 40 years of rally success.

Lancia HF Squadra Corse (another name for Scuderia Lancia) remains, to this day, the most successful manufacturer in WRC history (10 titles), just ahead of Toyota (9 titles). Toyota is expected to equal this record by the end of the 2026 season. Meanwhile, Lancia has recently returned to rallying with the Ypsilon HF competing in the WRC-2 category (second division). With new regulations coming into effect in 2027, Lancia could well return to winning ways in the coming years.
