In the 1990s, with the exception of Mazda, Japanese manufacturers were not known for their involvement or success at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. A few years after Mazda’s victory and a pole position secured in 1990, Nissan returned to the competition through its NISMO division and built Skyline cars for the GT1 class. This support class was also the one that attracted the largest crowds. After an unsuccessful first outing in 1995, NISMO returned in 1996 with an improved Skyline that was ten seconds faster per lap in practice! Car No. 23, driven by Kazuyoshi Hoshino, Masahiro Hasemi and Toshio Suzuki, finished fifteenth at the end of the 24-hour race and 10th in its class.
